Youth
Programs
Diversity Kansas programming promotes a style of dialogue that
facilitates personal liberation and bridge
building as participants share personally relevant stories - creating
"change moments" that bring new insights and foster
belief in the power to affect positive change in individuals and
society.
Diversity Kansas prepares students to be successful in multicultural
environments. Students surveyed over ten years report and increased
willingness to interact respectfully with those whom they perceive
to be different.
OurTown Leadership Institute - a one-week
program for high school and college students designed to help
youth become aware of bias, bigotry and racism and its effects
personally and institutionally. Activities address classism,
sexism, stereotyping and prejudice. The program encourages interaction
of up to 40 youth from different socioeconomic, racial and ethnic
backgrounds. The experience helps students learn skills in multicultural
communication, conflict resolution and inter-group relations.

High School Our Town Leadership Institute Information
Heritage
Panel - workshop for high school students to discuss
diversity and how their own culture is perceived. Students gain
public speaking experience and learn to make presentations.
The emphasis is on developing presentation and speaking skills.
More than 2,500 students have participated. More than 90% of
students report having greater positive feelings about their
own culture after participating in Heritage Panel.
Talking in Class - a one-day training program
that engages high school students in activities that explore
how we include or exclude others based on our perceptions and
biases. Students participate in dialogue that helps them learn
to articulates the negative stereotypes used and how harmful
they are to self-esteem, school achievement, student participation
and a safe school climate.
Different
and the Same - Video series of nine topics designed for
use with Kindergarten through third grade students to reduce prejudice
and bullying. Topics include stereotyping, name calling, being
excluded from mainstream culture and choosing a friend across
racial lines. Created by Family Communications, producers of the
Mr. Rogers television show.
